What are Diseases and Conditions pages? #

Diseases and Conditions pages in the NIAID Data Ecosystem provide a centralized view of datasets, tools, and resources related to specific infectious and immune-mediated diseases and conditions.

Each page includes:

  • The disease or condition description from niaid.gov
  • Visual summaries of available resources, including visualizations of data types, sources, conditions of access, and other metadata properties
  • A list of external resources for the disease or condition

Currently, Diseases and Conditions pages are available for a curated list of high-priority infectious and immune-mediated diseases and conditions. You can browse all available Diseases and Conditions pages from the Diseases and Conditions index page.

Why/when would I use Diseases and Conditions pages? #

Diseases and Conditions pages include findings on critical areas of research, such as immune response pathways, diagnostic markers, and vaccine development. Diseases and Conditions pages provide curated, visual pathways to explore resources. Instead of starting with a blank search box, navigate through interactive elements - like “Resources mentioning Asthma also mentioned the following…” - to uncover related information. For example, clicking “expression profiling by array” under “Measurement Technique” instantly provides matching results.

⚠️The visualizations on Diseases and Conditions pages are aggregated from metadata provided by each record. Only records that include the relevant metadata are represented in charts and filters. Some resources that appear in search results may not be reflected in visualizations if they are missing this metadata. For the most comprehensive view, consider combining visual exploration with direct search queries.

How do I use Diseases and Conditions pages to find and access resources? #

All links and buttons within the Diseases and Conditions pages provide entry points to datasets, tools, and other resources. Also, you can find a count of all resources related to the disease or condition at the top with a link to view all of the results.

Co-mentions visualization #

The first visualizations explore Health Conditions that co-occur in the resources, key Measurement Techniques used, and Pathogens referenced across the resources.

Tips:

  • Toggle between your preferred visualization type - lists or treemaps. The list view offers a straightforward format that is easy to scan. The treemap view provides an at-a-glance view of patterns and proportions in the metadata, making it easier to spot dominant trends.
  • Using the list view, slide or resize the blue box over the bar chart to change the number of “terms” displayed.
  • Click on any of the terms in either view to see specific search results in the Discovery Portal.

Data Types visualization #

The Data Types visualization provides a summary of the kinds of resources returned from a search associated with the disease or condition. Once again, click any of the links within the visualization or legend to see search results related to the disease and resource type in the Discovery Portal. You can toggle between a linear or log scale view of the visualization. The log scale view helps smaller categories remain visible and meaningful alongside larger ones, revealing trends or patterns that could be hidden on the linear scale.

Conditions of Access visualization #

The Conditions of Access visualization provides a visual breakdown of the data accessibility associated with the resources. Resources may be listed as open, registered, or controlled. Open means the resource can be accessed from the source by anyone without any extra steps. Registered means the resource can be accessed once you have registered on the source website. Controlled means the resource requires specific authorization from the source for access.

Data Sources visualization #

The Data Sources visualization shows where all of the resources related to the disease or condition come from. It indicates whether each source is an IID (infectious and immune-mediated disease) repository or a Generalist (not domain-specific) repository. The Data Sources visualization also provides the ability to toggle between a linear or log scale view. Again, the log scale view may be used to examine smaller categories that get overshadowed by the larger ones in the linear view.

Select a topic from the Diseases and Conditions page and start exploring the available resources.
